Black and white7½x11 publicity photograph of Pietro Mascagni sitting at a piano.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Professor Pasquale Marinari/Buenos Aires, August 4, 1922/P. Mascagni" in Italian. B/w, 7½x11 overall, image 6¼x8½ (one surface). Italian composer and conductor Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) was thrust into fame by fate. His one act opera, Cavalleria rusticana, had been submitted to a local contest by his wife, without his knowledge. The opera, the fourth act of his ambitious Ratcliff, received thunderous applause, and the opera, which was staged in Rome in 1890, thrust him into the spotlight. Unfortunately, although Mascagni wrote a number of other operas, none achieved the success of Cavalleria rusticana, but the composer also enjoyed a following as a conductor of operas. Numerous creases, none at face. Surface damage at 2 areas at center of photograph. Previous owner has unwisely tried to correct damage by penciling over creases. Soiled. Mounting remnants on verso. Small crease at the "P" of signature.
