Sale Price $850.00
Black and white publicity photograph of Pietro Mascagni.
Photograph mount inscribed and signed: "Dear Professor Luigi Fusilli,/in remembrance/P. Mascagni/Rome, 18 August/1933 (XI)" in Italian. B/w, 7¼x10 overall, image 4x6 (two surfaces). Italian composer and conductor Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) was thrust into fame by fate. His one act opera, Cavalleria rusticana, had been submitted to a local contest by his wife, without his knowledge. The opera, the fourth act of his ambitious Ratcliff, received thunderous applause, and the opera, which was staged in Rome in 1890, thrust him into the spotlight. Unfortunately, although Mascagni wrote a number of other operas, none achieved the success of Cavalleria rusticana, but the composer also enjoyed a following as a conductor of operas. In 1922, Benito Mussolini was summoned by King Victor Emmanuel III to become Prime Minister of Italy. The "XI" penned by Mascagni next to "1933" indicates the 11th year of Mussolini's ministry. Deckle edge gray mount. Light browning at lower right, else in fine condition.
