POLK LAFFOON

The U.S. Congressman from Kentucky pens his autograph on this 7¼x1½ piece of paper, in iron gall ink

Signature: “Polk Laffoon/Madisonville/Kentucky” in iron gall ink. 7¼x1½. James Knox Polk Laffoon (1844-1906) was a U.S. Congressman from Kentucky who participated in the Civil War as part of the Confederates States Army in Company F, 8th Kentucky Infantry. Elected a lieutenant, he was captured at the Battle of Fort Donelson and was held as prisoner of war in Indiana, Exchanged at Vicksburg and discharged at Knoxville, Tennessee. Then, he enlisted in Adam Rankin Johnson's 10th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment and again was made a lieutenant. He was captured at Cheshire, Ohio in July 1863, during John Hunt Morgan's raid north of the Ohio River and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war. Afterwards, he studied law and served as the prosecuting attorney for Hopkins County and was elected as a Democrat to the 49th and 50th Congresses (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1889); he also served as chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of War and did not seek reelection in 1888. Polk Laffoon resumed his law practice in Madisonville and is interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Madisonville. Lightly toned. Irregular cut. Left margin slightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
