PORTER WAGONER
A major force in the growing popularity of country music
First Day Cover signed: "Porter Wagoner", 6½x3¾. FDC honoring the 150th anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, 5-cent stamp affixed, postmarked New Orleans, LA, January 8, 1965, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Country music superstar Porter Wagoner (1927-2007) began his recording in career in 1955 and almost immediately had a No. 1 hit with "A Satisfied Mind" (which would become the title of his autobiography). Invited to join the Grand Ole Opry just two years later, Wagoner is one of the Opry's most popular stars and is credited with helping to popularize country music with his appearances on behalf of the Opry and through his syndicated Porter Wagoner Show (January 1961-January 1974). In 1967, he introduced singer Dolly Parton on his show. Wagoner won four Grammy awards (one with Dolly and two with the Blackwood Brothers.) He entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002. Upper portion of the "W" in Wagoner touches postmark. Slightly rippled. Slightly soiled on verso. Fine condition.
