EISAKU SATO. Magazine Cover signed in white in Japanese, 1p, 7¼x11. "Time" magazine, Canadian Edition, February 10, 1967 issue. Pictures profile of "Japan's Premier Sato" on cover. Index page and five-page article headed: "Japan/The Right Eye of Daruma" included. Cover, which is closely trimmed, is lightly creased. Remnants of mailing label at lower left margin. Pages are lightly creased, stapled at blank left margins. Ink note (unknown hand) at upper margin of index page. Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by engraved transmittal card, unsigned, 4x2½. In full: "With the compliments of/The Prime Minister of Japan". Lightly creased at right margin. Slightly soiled. Eisaku Sato (1901-1975) was Prime Minister of Japan and President of the Liberal Democratic Party from December 1964-June 1972. The recipient of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, Sato had served in a number of government offices from 1948, when he was named Chief Cabinet Secretary in the second Yoshida Cabinet. After being elected to Japan's House of Representatives in 1949, Sato served in a number of government and party positions, including Secretary General of the Liberal Party (1950-1951, 1953-1954), Minister of Postal Services and Telecommunications (1951-1952), Minister of Finance (1958-1960), Minister of International Trade and Industry (1961-1962) and Minister of State in charge of the 18th Olympic Games (1963-1964).
