RICHARD HATFIELD. Picture Postcard signed: "Richard B.
Hatfield/Premier of New Brunswick". Color, 5½x½. Unmailed, but bearing a
10-cent Canadian stamp. Signed on verso of an illustration of the Shield of the
Arms of the Province of New Brunswick. Richard Hatfield (1931-1991) entered the
New Brunswick legislature in 1961, becoming provincial leader of the
Progressive Conservative Party in 1969 and soon thereafter Premier
(1970-1987). Hatfield worked closely across party lines with Canadian
Prime Minister Trudeau on patriation of Canada's Constitution and creation of a
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982). He was tried but
acquitted on drug charges after marijuana was found in his suitcase
during the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to the country in 1984. Accused of
traveling too frequently to the US and Europe, Hatfield responded that he was
"elected to run New Brunswick, not to live there." He resigned as Premier and
party leader after the Progressive Conservatives failed to win a single seat in
the provincial election of 1987. He was named to the Canadian Senate in 1990 but
died the next year. Fine condition.
