RICHARD HATFIELD. Typed Letter signed: "Richard Hatfield",
1p, 7x10½. No place, 1972 August 31. On his letterhead as Premier of New
Brunswick to Danniel Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "This will
acknowledge and thank you for your letter of August 15. As you have requested, I
have autographed the postcard which you enclosed [not included] and want
to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to you to come and visit our
beautiful Province. Sincerely". Richard Hatfield (1931-1991) entered the
New Brunswick legislature in 1961, becoming provincial leader of the
Progressive Conservative Party in 1969 and soon thereafter Premier
(1970-1987). Hatfield worked closely across party lines with Canadian
Prime Minister Trudeau on patriation of Canada's Constitution and creation of a
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982). He was tried but
acquitted on drug charges after marijuana was found in his suitcase
during the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to the country in 1984. Accused of
traveling too frequently to the US and Europe, Hatfield responded that he was
"elected to run New Brunswick, not to live there." He resigned as Premier and
party leader after the Progressive Conservatives failed to win a single seat in
the provincial election of 1987. He was named to the Canadian Senate in 1990 but
died the next year. Fine condition.
