His ink signature as Premier of Saskatchewan on a printed card with provincial logo
Printed Card signed in ink: "T. C. Douglas" as Premier of Saskatchewan, 5x3 printed card

1961-1971. Scottish-born Canadian politician Thomas Clement "Tommy" Douglas
(1904-1986) was the first socialist leader of a government on the North American
continent. Douglas, a former Baptist minister, was a Member of Canada's Parliament
(1935-1940, 1962-1979) and served five terms as Premier of Saskatchewan (1944-1961).
Douglas was the "father of medicare" in Canada, and he introduced a number of other
pioneering concepts while Premier, including the creation of the publicly owned Saskatchewan
Power Corp., the creation of Canada's first publicly owned automobile insurance service,
legislation that allowed public service employees to unionize and the first Canadian program to
offer free hospital care to all citizens. In 2004, Douglas was named "The Greatest Canadian"
in a CBC Television contest, edging out such other prominent Canadians as Lester Pearson
and Pierre Trudeau. Soiled. Ink signature (unknown hand) on verso (light show-through
lower right margin). Ink smudged at the "s" in Douglas. Otherwise, fine condition.
