MINSTREL SONGS: CIVIL WAR. Illustrated Handbill of Lyrics,
unsigned, 1p, 6¼x9¾. Titled: "Whack Row de Dow./No. 2. - As sung by
Dan Bryant." Lyrics by Miss Fanny Herring; music arranged by W.L. Hobbs.
Published by H. De Marsan, New York. Drawings of a Black man playing a banjo
at lower left; two Black children dancing at lower right. Pencil notes (unknown
hand) at upper margin: "1862 Lincoln". Partial lyrics: "Now, Johnny
Bell may put on airs, But what care we for that?...But if he will but just keep
cool, Until we settle up our family quarrel, We will take them all together:
For, it makes no odds to Abe Lincoln. Whack! row de dow! Puty boy is Abe
Lincoln! Whack! row de dow! How are you, Rail-Splitter?" The song mentions
Union Generals Halleck and Pope, Confederate General Beauregard, Horace Greeley,
"Old Jeff" (Jefferson Davis) and Abe Lincoln. The original version of this
Civil War song was written by FANNY HERRING in 1861. This second version of the
song, which was also called "A Hunkey Boy Is Yankee Doodle", was written for DAN
BRYANT of Bryant's Minstrels, a black-face minstrel group that played in New
York's Mechanics Hall from 1857-1866. One of the members of Bryant's Minstrels
was Dan Emmett, the writer of "Turkey in the Straw", "Old Dan Tucker" and
"Dixie", a song written strictly for entertainment value that became the
Confederate marching song. Lightly creased. Upper right blank corner
missing. Lightly soiled. Nailhead-size mounting remnants at corners on verso,
lightly show through. Overall, fine condition.
