Publisher, New York/Entered according to act of Congress AD 1862 by Johnson, Fry
& Co. in the clerks office of the district court for the southern district
of N.Y." From a painting by Alonzo Chappel. As 16th U.S. President
(1861-1865), Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) led the Union through the Civil War
and issued the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863) that freed the
slaves in the South. A frontier attorney and member of the Illinois State House
of Representatives (1834-1841), Lincoln served as a U.S. Congressman from
Illinois (1847-1849) and ran for the U.S. Senate in 1858. Although he lost
that race, his debates with Stephen A. Douglas received national
attention, and Lincoln won the Republican nomination for president - and the
election - in 1860. Reelected in 1864, Lincoln was shot by disgruntled
actor John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865
and died the following morning. Pinhead sized spot at left of blank lower
margin. History For Sale watermark not present on original. Fine
