ALEXANDRE MILLERAND
President of France, 1920-1924.
Postcard Photograph signed: "A. Millerand". B/w,
3½x5½. Captioned in French and English: "War Minister 1914-1915".
Printed on verso, in French: "European War of 1914/Patriotic Edition".
Millerand served as Minister of War under French Presidents Poincare (1912-1914)
and Viviani (1914-1915). On the resignation of Prime Minister Clemenceau in
January 1920, Millerand formed a right-center coalition government. During his
time as Prime Minister, he was mainly concerned with implementing the Treaty of
Versailles and suppressing the revolutionary activity of workers influenced by
the Russian Revolution. In September 1920, Millerand was elected President of
France. In power, he was accused by Socialists and Communists of ignoring the
traditional presidential neutrality by openly supporting right-wing politicians.
After the left did well in the elections of May 1924, Millerand was forced from
office. Lightly creased at top and right margins. Lightly worn edges. Overall,
fine condition.
