B/w, 3¼x5. Inscribed in another hand in Spanish: "To Mr. Norman Jones,
cordially, Asunción, 18 of May 1964". General Alfredo Stroessner (1912-2006)
rose rapidly in rank during Paraguay's war with Bolivia (the Chaco War,
1932-1935). Named Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces in 1951, he
ousted his predecessor in a coup in 1954 and became dictator of Paraguay.
Stroessner, who ruled impoverished Paraguay for 35 years until
deposed in a coup in 1989, lived the rest of his life in comfortable exile in
Brazil. Light diagonal crease at lower left background and corner. Glue stains
at lower edge on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
