ANDREW JACKSON
Concerning a claim for a wagon and a horse.
ALS: "Andrew Jackson" as U.S. Senator from Tennessee, 1p, 7¾x12¾. City (Washington), 1824 January 19.
To Mr. P. Hagner. In full: "I enclose the letter of Mr Johnston
asking me to make enquiry as to a claim he has had settled for a waggon
(sic) & horse; will you have the goodness to furnish me with such
information as is requested by him; & the evidence in your Department will
aford (sic); & return the enclosed, with such information."
Addressed by Jackson on verso: "Mr. Peter Hagner/3rd auditor".
Docketed, probably by Hagner: "19 Jany 1824/Genl Jackson/Recd & Ansd same
day". PETER HAGNER (1772-1850), appointed a clerk in the Department of
the Treasury by President Washington in 1793, was appointed Third Auditor by
President Monroe when that office was created in 1817. He served in the Treasury
Department for 56 years, resigning his office in 1849. Twice Congress voted
Hagner appreciation for his services in the settlement of large and important
claims before the institution of the Court of Claims. Senator ANDREW JACKSON
was a presidential candidate in 1824. In the November 2, 1824 election,
he defeated Secretary of State John Q. Adams (153,544 to 108,740 popular votes,
99-84 electoral votes), Secretary of the Treasury William H. Crawford (47,136
popular, 41 electoral votes) and House Speaker Henry Clay (46,618 popular, 37
electoral votes). As no candidate received a majority of the 261 electoral
votes, the election devolved upon the House of Representatives, which elected
Adams sixth President with Clay's support. Fragile. Horizontal folds, which had
separated, have been repaired on verso. All words are intact. Silked along right
edge of verso, light show through at blank margin. Nicked and worn at edges,
with some repairs. 1-inch circular tear at right edge from opening of seal (its
remnant on verso). Light vertical fold touches the "c" in
Jackson.
