ANDREW JACKSON and GEORGE GRAHAM. Partly Printed Document on vellum paper, signed: "Andrew Jackson" as seventh U.S. President and "Geo Graham" as Commissioner of the General Land Office, 1p, 14x9¼. Washington, 1830 January 4. White wafer seal in lower left corner. Docketed on verso. James H. Gaither, assignee of David Hunter, having made full payment, is granted title to lands sold at Jeffersonville, Indiana. GEORGE GRAHAM had been Madison and Monroe's Secretary of War ad interim from October 22, 1816 to December 9, 1817. The Land Act of April 24, 1820 abolished the credit system that enabled settlers to make deferred payment on their land and reduced the per acre purchase price from $2 to $1.25, with the entire amount to be paid at the time of purchase. The Territory of Michigan was established in 1805. Michigan became a state in 1837. Folds. Vertical fold touches the "Geo" in Graham. Lightly soiled. Shaded at edges. Pinhead-size hole between 2 lines of text does not touch writing. One-inch tear in upper left margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
