A year after the Civil War, the President appoints a U.S. Attorney for Georgia.
Partly Printed DS: "Andrew Johnson" as President and "William H. Seward" as Secretary of State, 1p, 18x11½. Washington, 1866 May 4. In full: "Know ye, That reposing special trust & confidence in the Integrity, Ability & Learning of Henry S. Fitch, of Georgia, I have nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, do appoint him Attorney of the United States in & for the District of Georgia...for the term of four years from the day of the date hereof, unless the President of the United States for the time being, should be pleased sooner to revoke and determine this commission." On verso is a manuscript Oath of Office to support the Constitution of the United States of America signed: "Henry S. Fitch" and witnessed: "John Erskine/Judge U States District/Court for Dist of Georgia". Georgia was not formally readmitted to representation into the U.S. Congress for another four years (July 15, 1870). WILLIAM H. SEWARD was Secretary of State under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson (1861-1869). HENRY S. FITCH had served as Attorney of the United States in and for the Northern District of Illinois from 1858-1861. 2¾-inch diameter paper seal affixed with red wax at left which is stained. Creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the second "l" in William. 2" separation at lower vertical fold and 3" separation at upper vertical fold. Pinhead-size holes at cross folds. Nicked at edges of horizontal folds. Slightly shaded from prior framing. Lightly stained and soiled in blank areas.
