The Tennessee Governor personally fills out a commission.
Partly Printed DS: "Andrew Johnson" as Governor of Tennessee, 1p, 7¾x9¾. Nashville, 1854 August 12. In full: "To all who shall see these Presents---Greeting: Know Ye, That we do commission Jos. T. Harrison of the county of Gibson Justice of the Peace in and for said County, and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfil the duties of Justice of the Peace of said County, agreeably to the Constitution and Laws of the State, with all the powers, privileges, and emoluments thereunto appertaining." Surprisingly, Johnson personally filled out this document, crossing out the printed name of his predecessor, William B. Campbell, as well as the words: "Secretary of State". The appointee's name and county and month, day and "4" of the year are in Johnson's hand. Johnson had been elected Governor of Tennessee on October 3, 1853 and was reelected in 1855. He served as U.S. Senator from 1857-1862, when President Lincoln appointed him Military Governor of Tennessee. On blue paper. Irregularly cut at lower and left edges. Two small holes in center touch some printed text. Brown stains touch about 20 printed words and the "Johnso" of signature. Folds, one vertical touches the second "o" in Johnson.
