ANDREW JOHNSON. Partly Printed DS: "Andrew Johnson" on verso as Governor of Tennessee, 2p, 11¼x9¼, front and verso. Nashville, Tennessee, 1856 March 1. Grant of 225 acres of land in Marion County to Percy Grant. From 1843-1853, Johnson served in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat. Following the census of 1850, the Whig-controlled Tennessee state legislature gerrymandered the districts and Johnson lost his seat. Johnson then served a term as Governor of Tennessee from 1853-1857, entering the U.S. Senate in 1857, elected unanimously as a Democrat by the Tennessee legislature. Johnson's association with the Democrats was severed completely when he worked to prevent Tennessee from joining the secession movement after Lincoln's election to the presidency in 1860. When Union forces gained control of central Tennessee in 1862, Lincoln appointed Johnson Military Governor. Blue paper. Creased with folds. 2 creases touch 2 letters of signature. Nailhead-size holes at cross folds touch 2 words. Slightly shaded and foxed.
