ANDREW JOHNSON and GIDEON WELLES
Andrew Johnson and Gideon Welles sign a naval commission for George F. Wilkins as Master in the Navy.
Partly Printed Documents Signed: "Andrew Johnson" as President and "Gideon Welles" as Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 15¾x19½. On vellum. Washington, 1868 March 24. Appointment of George F. Wilkins as "Master in the Navy". Master was the rank between midshipman and lieutenant. On December 18, 1868, President Johnson appointed WILKINS Lieutenant in the Navy. Just 11 days before signing this document, President Johnson's impeachment trial began in the U.S. Senate. On the day President Johnson signed this document, March 24, 1868, the House of Representatives rejected the President's reply to the articles of impeachment. On May 16, 1868, President Johnson was found not guilty on all charges by a vote of 35 guilty, 19 not guilty, just one vote short of the two-thirds (36) necessary for removal from office. Lightly creased, soiled and shaded at edges. Some "skipping" of ink on both signatures but all is legible, and formation of all letters is present. Full, 3-inch blue seal shows light wear. Overall, fine condition.
