Presidential card and the original mailing envelope
Photograph signed: "Eanes". B/w, 5x7. Accompanied by two items:
1) printed Presidential card with a sentiment in Portugese, 4x2¾; and by an
envelope (8x5¾) from the President's , office, with canceled Portugese stamps,
postmarked March 16, 1977 (place illegible), addressed by an unknown hand to a
collector in Hayward, California. Antonio dos Santos Ramalho Eanes (b.
1935), a veteran of Portugal's colonial wars in Africa, was stationed in
Angola when the authoritarian regime was overthrown in 1974 by military officers
supported by mass street demonstrations. A supporter of the Armed Forces
Movement, Eanes returned to Portugal as head of Portuguese television. Still in
uniform, he organized the crackdown on the pro-communist faction in the Movement
in November 1975. Elected President of Portugal in 1976 and re-elected in 1980,
he held office until 1986. Afterwards he remained head of the Democratic
Renewal Party. As a former President, he sits on the Council of State. He has
received honors from foreign governments, including Britain's Royal Victorian
Chain (1985). Envelope opened at top edge. Photograph and Presidential card are
in fine condition.
