ANWAR SADAT
As President of Egypt, he signs a holiday greeting card in Arabic script.
Holiday Card signed: "Anwar Sadat" (in Arabic script), folded to 8x5½. Printed text in Arabic and English: "President Anwar El Sadat extends his best wishes for the New Year." Front of card bears an Egyptian eagle and the year: 1974. Anwar Sadat (1918-1981), a nationalistic Egyptian army officer instrumental in the overthrow of the King Farouk (1952) and a key aide (twice Vice President) to President Nasser, ascended to the Presidency himself in 1970, consolidating power and reversing many of Nasser's policies. In 1973 he launched the October War against Israel, putting up a credible fight and ultimately regaining the Suez Peninsula through negotiations. His hand thus strengthened, Sadat next braved the ire of many in the Arab World by visiting Jerusalem at the invitation of Prime Minister Begin and addressing the Israeli Knesset. An Egypt-Israeli Peace Treaty and mutual recognition, brokered by US President Carter at Camp David (1978) made Sadat a hero in the West but a villain to many in the Arab world. Sadat was assassinated during a parade commemorating the October War, October 6, 1981. Fine condition.
