Autograph Document Signed: "Benjamin Harrison/N.P.", 2p, front and verso, 7x6½. Marion County, Indiana, 1856 June 28.Twenty-two-year-old Notary Public Benjamin Harrison has penned the following: "State of Indiana Marion County. Before me a Notary Public in and for said County personally comes Edward Greenleaf plaintiff in the foregoing action who being duly sworn upon his oath says that the matters and things in the foregoing complaint set out are true as he truly believes and further saith not. Inscribed & sworn to before me this 28th day of June AD 1856." On verso are seven lines in Harrison's hand explaining Greenleaf's claim against Alvin C. Greenleaf who "is indebted to him in the sum of nine hundred and fifty three 15/100 dollars...." Embossed with his "B. Harrison Notary Public Marion County" seal. At the time, Harrison's father, John S. Harrison, was serving his second term in Congress (1853-1857). His grandfather was President William H. Harrison who had died 15 years earlier. Harrison had received his B.A. degree from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1852 and was admitted to the Cincinnati Bar in 1853. In 1854, he moved to Indiana. Light ink show through. Lightly creased and soiled.
