Check written and signed by the future 23rd U.S. President three years before he was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Indiana.
Check filled out and signed: "Benj Harrison", 7¾x3. Indianapolis, Indiana, 1873 June 4. Not numbered. Drawn on Fletcher & Sharpe's Bank, payable to "Fletcher & Sharpe" for $800. Above his signature, Harrison has written: "(To apply on my note for $1000)". Two-cent Internal Revenue stamp affixed at mid-left margin. Ink notes (unknown hand) obscure the face of George Washington on the stamp. Not endorsed on verso. In 1854, Harrison had moved to Indianapolis, where he established a law practice and served as a reporter for the Indiana State Supreme Court. Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901), the grandson of President William Henry Harrison, had served in the Union Army during the American Civil War before being elected as a Republican U.S. Representative from Indiana (1881-1887). In 1876, three years after he wrote this check, Harrison was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of the state. He later served one term as the 23rd President of the U.S. (1889-1893) before returning to Indianapolis. Lightly creased. Bank cut cancellation touches payee line. Lightly soiled at lower left margin and right edge. Upper and lower left and lower right corners chipped away. Overall, fine condition.
