BENJAMIN HARRISON
President Harrison and his Postmaster General, John Wanamaker, appoint a postmaster for Matteawan, New York.
Civil Appointment signed: "Benj Harrison" as President and "Jno Wanamaker" as Postmaster General, 1p, 17x14. Washington, 1890 July 10. Appointment of Peter H. Vosburgh as Postmaster at Matteawan, Dutchess County, New York. In 1875, in Philadelphia, JOHN WANAMAKER opened the first department store. As Postmaster General under President HARRISON (1889-1893), he issued the first commemorative stamps (over protests from Congress) and proved they could be moneymakers. He thought there would be collectors who would buy the commemoratives and keep them, rather than use them for postage. He was right. Two billion commemorative 1893 Columbian Exposition stamps were sold for 40 million dollars and were credited as a factor in the Exposition's success. Lightly stained and soiled. Red ribbons affixed to lightly creased gold seal at lower left. Fine condition.
