BENJAMIN HARRISON and JOHN WANAMAKER
Appointment of a Postmaster in Mount Carmel, Illinois.
Partly Printed DS: "Benj. Harrison" as President and "Jno Wanamaker" as Postmaster General, 1p, 16¼x13. City of Washington, 1889 June 18. In part: "Know ye, That, reposing special trust and confidence in the Intelligence, Diligence, and Discretion of John T. Stansfield, I do appoint him Postmaster at Mount Carmel, in the County of Wabash, State of Illinois...." BENJAMIN HARRISON filled his Cabinet with loyal supporters, including JOHN WANAMAKER, who served as Postmaster General during Harrison's entire administration (1889-1893). Among Wanamaker's improvements was the introduction of the Parcel Post system. An enthusiastic Republican, Wanamaker had run unsuccessfully for a number of offices. He was best known as a successful retail innovator. In 1861, he and his brother-in-law Nathan Brown had started a men's clothing business that developed into the country's largest retail men's clothing store within ten years. In 1877, he expanded by creating the first "department store". 2½-inch gold Post Office Department seal and teal blue ribbons affixed at lower left. Lightly creased and soiled. "Benj" slightly smudged. Shaded on verso (no show through).
