Harrison signed this manuscript letter on United States Senate stationery to J. Gardner
from Indianapolis, Indiana in 1883, while he was still a senator. With original mailing
envelope.
Manuscript lettersigned "Benj Harrison". 2 pages, 4½x7¾, 1 sheet front and verso, on United
States Senate stationery. Indianapolis, Indiana, April 10, 1883. Addressed to the Honorable
J. Gardner, Bedford, Indiana. In full: "Dear Sir: Yours of the 9th ins.t calling my attention to
the case of Mr M Cleveland and his desire to have appointment in the Pension Office rec'd. I will
ask Col. Dudley to give him an appointment, but, I must say to you, that I have two or three cases
of disabled soldiers which I have been recently press ing [sic] upon him as strongly as I know how,
and in a letter received from him the otherday he tells me he is utterly unable to do what I wish.
Yours truly". Accompanied by: Original mailing envelope from United States Senate
stationery. Postmakred Indianapolis, Indiana, April 10. Addressed to the Honorable J.
Gardner, Bedford, Indiana. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Random ink stains. Light tear on
left edge. Envleope was torn open along right edge. Otherwise in fine condition.Harrison
(1833-1901, born in North Bend, Ohio), the grandson of President William Henry
Harrison, had served in the Union Army during the American Civil War before being elected
as a Republican U.S. Senator from Indiana (1881-1887). In 1876, three years after he
wrote this check, Harrison was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of the state. He later
served one term as the 23rd President of the U.S. (1889-1893) before returning to
Indianapolis. Lightly toned. Manuscript handwriting is faded in areas, but legible. Page was
neatly torn from a pad or notebook at top edge. Slight tear at left edge of first horizontal fold.
