BENJAMIN HARRISON
As the Republican candidate for President (1888), he replies to two Californians who had congratulated him on his nomination.
Typed Letter signed: "Benjamin Harrison", 1 page, 8½x7¼. Indianapolis Indiana, 1888 July 31. On letterhead of his law firm to H. M. Goodwin and Miss Emma Goodwin, San Luis Obispo, California. In full: "Please accept my thanks for your very cordial congratulations of the 24th inst. Very truly yours". Benjamin Harrison (1838-1901), the 23rd President (1889-1893), had been a Brigadier General in the Civil War and a US Senator from Indiana (1881-1887). Harrison had secured the Republican nomination on the eight ballots at the party convention in Chicago (June 24, 1888), with New York City banker Levi P. Morton as his running mate. The principal issue of the campaign was the protective tariff, which Democratic incumbent Cleveland had proposed to lower. Elected President in 1888, despite losing the popular vote to Democratic Cleveland, he was defeated by the same opponent four years later. Vertical and horizontal letter folds one crosses the first "r" in Harrison. 1-inch tear in top fold crease. Lightly soiled at right margin. Minor smudging at "son" of signature. Otherwise in fine condition.
