CALVIN COOLIDGE and HARLAN FISKE STONE
1925 Judicial appointment signed by President Coolidge and Attorney General Stone, whom Coolidge would appoint later that year to the US Supreme Court.
Partly Printed Civil Appointment signed: "Calvin Coolidge" as President and "Harlan F. Stone" as Attorney General, 1 page, 19x15. Washington, 1925 January 17. Appointment of Isaac M. Meekins as U.S. District Court Judge, Eastern District of North Carolina. MEEKINS (1875-1946), a former Mayor of Elizabeth City, North Carolina (1897) and Republican candidate for Governor of that state (1924), served in this judgeship for twenty years (1925-1945). Later that same year President COOLIDGE would nominate STONE (1872-1946) to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he served as Associate Justice (1925-1941) and Chief Justice (1941-1946), dying in office. Though appointed by Coolidge, Stone was usually part of the minority that declined to oppose President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal economic measures. As Chief Justice, he played a key role in the Court's shift of attention from economic measures to civil liberties. Lightly creased. Stray ink marks at "Stone". Overall, fine condition.
