CALVIN COOLIDGE, CO-SIGNED BY: FRANK B. KELLOGG
Appointment to a diplomatic post in Tokyo, signed by President Coolidge and Secretary of State Kellogg in 1928, the year Kellogg negotiated a treaty renouncing war as an instrument of national policy.
Partially printed diplomatic appointment signed "Frank B. Kellogg" and "Calvin Coolidge". 18¾x15 with paper 3½-inch diameter Seal of the United States affixed. March 3, 1928. This was an appointment, signed by President Coolidge and Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg, appointing Charles L. DeVault to a diplomatic post in Tokyo, Japan. After losing an election for School Committee in 1905, COOLIDGE (1872-1933) never lost another one. He was Mayor of Northampton, Massachusetts (1910-1911), State Senator (1912-1915), Lieutenant Governor (1916-1918), Governor (1919-1920), vice president (1921-1923) and president (1923-1929). "Silent Cal," as he was called for his economy of speech, succeeded to the Presidency upon the death of Warren Harding and won election to his own full term in 1924. Coolidge's Secretary of State from 1925-1929, Frank B. Kellogg was awarded the 1929 Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the Kellogg-Briand Peace Pact, an agreement signed in 1928 by 15 nations (later agreed to by 64 others) renouncing "war as an instrument of national policy". Kellogg had previously served as a Republican U.S. Senator from Minnesota (1917-1923) and U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain (1923-1925). Lightly toned and creased through "lo" of Kellogg. Otherwise in fine condition.
