CALVIN COOLIDGE
He signs a typed letter informing an unsuccessful Republican Congressional candidate that he has no job for him at present.
Typed Letter signed: "Calvin Coolidge" as President, 1 page, 7x8¾. Washington, D.C., 1925 January 19. On White House stationery to Charles A Littlefield, Lynn, Massachusetts. In full: "I am very pleased to have your letter of the 10th instant, and you may be sure that you will not be at all misunderstood in what you have said. I am sorry to say that nothing occurs to me now that might interest you, but it is possible that later I may be able to find some service that will appeal to you. Very truly yours". After losing an election for School Committee in 1905, CALVIN COOLIDGE (1872-1933) never lost another one. He was Mayor of Northampton, Massachusetts (1910-1911), State Senator (1912-1915), Lieutenant Governor (1916-1918), Governor (1919-1920), Vice President (1921-1923) and President (1923-1929). "Silent Cal," as he was called for his economy of speech, succeeded to the Presidency upon the death of Warren Harding and won election to his own full term in 1924. A Charles A. Littlefield lost a race for the US House seat representing Lynn, Massachusetts (then the 7th CD) in November 1924. It's very likely that the same Charles A. Littlefield had requested an appointive position in the Coolidge administration. Slightly creased and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
