CALVIN COOLIDGE
As President he signs a typed letter thanking a correspondent for an
editorial and an expression of sympathy, probably relating to the death of
Coolidge's father.
Typed Letter Signed: "Calvin Coolidge" as 30th U.S. President,
1 page, 7x9. Washington, D.C., 1926 April 9. On letterhead of "The White
House" to Mr. John C. Shaffer, Rocky Mountain News, Denver, Colorado. In
full: "I deeply appreciate, not only the editorial which you enclose, but
the kindly thought which prompted your remembrance of me at this time. It is
a source of help and comfort to know that I have the sympathy of friends like
yourself. Very truly yours". The expression of sympathy was probably
over the death of Coolidge's father, 80-year old Colonel John Coolidge, who had
died on March 18, 1926. Coolidge as President suffered the dual
misfortune of losing both a father and a son while in office; his younger
son, Cal, Jr., had died of blood poisoning in 1924. "Silent Cal," as he was
called for his economy of speech, succeeded to the Presidency upon the death of
Warren Harding and won election to a full term in his own right in 1924.
After losing an election for School Committee in 1905, Calvin Coolidge
(1872-1933) never lost another one. He was Mayor of Northampton,
Massachusetts (1910-1911), Massachusetts State Senator (1912-1915),
Lieutenant Governor (1916-1918) and Governor (1919-1920) of
Massachusetts, Harding's Vice President (1921-1923) and President
(1923-1929). Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Slightly soiled at
blank margins, tape remnants on verso of integral leaf (no show-through). Fine
condition.
