CALVIN COOLIDGE
He signs a typed 1929 letter praising Deerfield Academy: "a preparatory school where as much emphasis is placed on the development of character as on the training of the mind."
TLS: "Calvin Coolidge", 1 page, 8½x11. Northampton, Massachusetts, 1929 April 24. To Robert W. Maynard, President, R.H. Stearns Company, Boston. In full: "While I have a personal acquaintance with Frank L. Boyden, the Principal of the Deerfield Academy, I have had no personal relations with his school but know it from its reputation among the people and at Amherst College. It is thought to rank very high as a preparatory school where as much emphasis is placed on the development of character as on the training of the mind. I wish for it every possible success." CALVIN COOLIDGE was graduated from Amherst College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1895. FRANK L. BOYDEN (1879-1972) was headmaster at Deerfield Academy from 1902-1968, turning a country school with 14 enrollees into a prestigious prep school. Coolidge had left the White House just seven weeks before writing this letter. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches "Co" in Coolidge. Minor soiling at right and lower blank margins. Pencil notes on verso (unknown hand, no show-through). Two "X"s penned on the recipient's name and address. Overall, fine condition.
