A few months before his death, he signs a typed letter to a Vermont carpenter discussing improvements to the family home there.
Typed Letter signed: "Calvin Coolidge", 1 page, 8x11. Northampton, Massachusetts, 1932 May 14. On personal letterhead to Mr. H. V. Woods, Bridgewater, Vermont. In full: "You will recall some talk about the bathroom on the second floor. When you get up there, you might consider running the partition from the bathroom door Southwesterly to the chimney corner. That would give a chance to enlarge the bathroom a little. I am enclosing you a sketch. I am also wondering if the hall on the second floor is likely to be dark, but I do not think that it is of great importance. It might make it desirable putting glass in the North and South bedroom doors. Very truly yours". After losing an election for School Committee in 1905, Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933) never lost another one. He was Mayor of Northampton, Massachusetts (1910-1911), State Senator (1912-1915), Lieutenant Governor (1916-1918), Governor (1919-1920), Vice President (1921-1923) and President (1923-1929). "Silent Cal," as he was called for his economy of speech, succeeded to the Presidency upon the death of Warren Harding and won election to his own full term in 1924. Coolidge was born in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, just south of Bridgewater. He vacationed there; was sworn into office in the family home by his father, John Coolidge, a Justice of the Peace, on August 3, 1923; and is buried in the Plymouth Notch cemetery. In this letter, he is certainly discussing improvements to the family home. Fine condition.
