He signs a typed letter (1930) to the future President of New York Life
discussing trip arrangements, and stating that he does not wish to make a speech
at the Directors meeting.
Typed Letter signed: "Calvin Coolidge", 1 page, 8¼x11. Northampton,
Massachusetts, 1930 August 19. On personal letterhead to Thomas A. Buckner,
New York City. In full: "Of course I hate to miss the Directors
meeting on September tenth. Perhaps I should go to that and go from New York to
the Adirondacks rather than go to the Convention first and then leave it to go
the Directs meeting. You might advise me about this. I do not wish to undertake
to make any speech. You might have some one look up the trains from New York
that leave after the Director meeting and advise me. With kindest regards, I am

losing an election for School Committee in 1905, Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933)
never lost another one. He was Mayor of Northampton, Massachusetts (1910-1911),
State Senator (1912-1915), Lieutenant Governor (1916-1918), Governor
(1919-1920), Vice President (1921-1923) and President (1923-1929). "Silent
Cal," as he was called for his economy of speech, succeeded to the Presidency
upon the death of Warren Harding and won election to his own full term in 1924.
Coolidge was a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Life Insurance
Company, which elevated Thomas A. Buckner to President of the company on March
11, 1931, after amending the corporate by-laws to create the post of
Chairman of the Board for the outgoing President, Darwin P. Kingsley.Lightly creased. Vertical fold crosses signature. Otherwise, fine
