CALVIN COOLIDGE
Lieutenant Governor Coolidge thanks a supporter who had circulated nomination papers for him.
Typed Letter Signed: "Calvin Coolidge" as Lieutenant Governor, 1p, 7½x10¼. Boston, Massachusetts, 1917 August 21. On official letterhead to George E. Hallowell, Peabody, Mass. In full: "The nomination paper you were so kind as to circulate for me has been returned. No doubt you would know without my telling you how much I value and appreciate your services and support, but I should not feel I was doing my part not to send you a word of gratitude for such a substantial favor. The faithful, efficient, and unselfish work of our Committeemen, and those who aid them, is the strength of our party and is worthy of every honorable recognition." Coolidge served three one-year terms as Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor, 1916-1918. This letter thanks a constituent who helped get Coolidge's name on the ballot in November 1917. In 1918, he successfully ran for Governor. Two years later, after taking a strong stand against the Boston police strike, he became the Republican Party's Vice Presidential nominee. He assumed the Presidency after Warren Harding's death (August 2, 1923), and won re-election to a full term in 1924. Lightly creased. Type transfer touches signature. Mounting remnants on verso show through to blank areas.
