CALVIN COOLIDGE
The President signs a typed letter thanking a Boston newspaperman for supporting his appointment of a former and future American Legion Commander as Assistant Secretary of War.
Typed Letter signed: "Calvin Coolidge" as President, 1 page, 7x8¾. Washington, D.C., 1925 October 17. On White House stationery to James T. Williams, Jr., c/o Boston American, Boston, Massachusetts. In full: "Thank you very much for your telegram regarding the appointment of Colonel MacNider. I am glad that your opinion of him coincides with my own. Very truly yours". Accompanied by unsigned White House envelope (7¼x4¾) with typed address of Williams, postmarked October 17, 1925. After losing an election for School Committee in 1905, CALVIN COOLIDGE (1872-1933) never lost another one. He was Mayor of Northampton, Massachusetts (1910-1911), State Senator (1912-1915), Lieutenant Governor (1916-1918), Governor (1919-1920), Vice President (1921-1923) and President (1923-1929). "Silent Cal," as he was called for his economy of speech, succeeded to the Presidency upon the death of Warren Harding and won election to his own full term in 1924. Hanford MacNider (1889-1968) was a decorated veteran of both World Wars. He was twice National Commander of the American Legion (1921-1922, 1931). He was Iowa's "favorite son" candidate for the Republican Presidential nomination in 1940. Coolidge appointed MacNider Assistant Secretary of War. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
