CALVIN COOLIDGE
Typed letter as Vice President-elect, accepting congratulations.
Typed Letter Signed: "Calvin Coolidge" as Governor of Massachusetts, 1 page, 7¼x10½. State House, Boston, 1920 November 4. To Mr. Sterling J. Joyner, Brooklyn, New York. In full: "It was exceedingly thoughtful of you to send me such a gracious message. I want to thank you for your kind wishes which I assure you I reciprocate." Two days earlier, on November 2, 1920, the Republican ticket of Ohio Senator Warren G. Harding and Massachusetts Governor Calvin Coolidge defeated the Democratic team of Ohio Governor James M. Cox and Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt, 404-127 electoral votes, 37-11 states. Coolidge, who had served as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts from 1916-1918, had risen to national prominence while Governor of Massachusetts (1919-1920). In 1919, after Boston police were not allowed to form a union, they called a strike and did not report for duty. When rioting and looting broke out, Coolidge called out the state militia. His decisive action and his efficiency in reorganizing state government resulted in the "favorite son" candidate receiving the vice presidential nomination. Horizontal fold just touches the "C" and "C" of signature, lightly creased. Fine condition.
