CALVIN COOLIDGE
Typed letter signed as President, extending good wishes to a group preparing to commemorate the landing of the Pilgrims.
Typed Letter signed: "Calvin Coolidge" as President, 1 page, 6x7½. Washington, D.C., 1923 December 20. On White House stationery to Mr. T. W. Williams, New England Society of Orange, New York, N.Y.. In full: "Your letter advising me of the forthcoming celebration of the anniversary of the Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers, by the New England Society of Orange, is received. I am obliged to you for informing me of your plans for this occasion, and will be most appreciative if you will extend my felicitations and good wishes to the company who will be gathered at that time. Most sincerely yours". After losing an election for School Committee in 1905, CALVIN COOLIDGE (1872-1933) never lost another one. He was Mayor of Northampton, Massachusetts (1910-1911), State Senator (1912-1915), Lieutenant Governor (1916-1918), Governor (1919-1920), Vice President (1921-1923) and President (1923-1929). "Silent Cal," as he was called for his economy of speech, succeeded to the Presidency upon the death of Warren Harding and won election to his own full term in 1924. Since the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts in 1620, 1923 or '24 was a little late for an anniversary celebration. Coolidge may have been referring to the centenary of Pilgrim Hall Museum, the oldest public museum in the US, which had opened, housing Pilgrim artifacts, in 1824. Slightly soiled. Fine condition.
