ISRAEL'S FIRST PRESIDENT WRITES TO GENERAL AHARON REMEZ, FORMER COMMANDER OF THE ISRAELI AIR FORCE, UPON THE DEATH OF THE GENERAL'S FATHER, A MEMBER OF THE ISRAELI CABINET

CHAIM WEIZMANN.
TLS: "Chaim Weizmann" in Hebrew as 1st President of Israel, 1p, 6½x9. [Jerusalem], 1951 May 22. To Brigadier General Aharon Remez. In full: "Do accept my sincere consolation on the sudden death of your father David Remez, the Minister of Education & Culture in the government of Israel. With his death, we were taken away of a keen comrade to the Zionist Operation as well as a very dear friend who for more than 40 years served our nation as a loyal delegate of the Labor Party in the Zionist Organization. His death uprooted one of the main central pillars of our nation. Blessed be his memory." Typed at lower right that a copy of this letter was sent to Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. Receipt stamp (30 May) at lower right. Born in Tel-Aviv, AHARON REMEZ (1919-1994) joined the Zionist military organization, the Haganah, in 1936. He volunteered for the British Royal Air Force in 1942 and served as a combat pilot in World War II. Discharged from the RAF in 1947, Remez rejoined the Haganah and was appointed operations officer and chief of staff of the Air Service. Upon Israel's independence in 1948, the Haganah became the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Remez served as the Commander of the Israeli Air Force (July 1948 to December 1950). From 1965-1970, he was Israel's Ambassador to Great Britain. His father, DAVID REMEZ (1886-1951), had died on May 19, 1951, three days before President Weizmann wrote this letter. He had served as Minister of Transportation in Israel's first government and was Minister of Education and Culture at the time of his death. CHAIM WEIZMANN (1874-1952) was President of the World Zionist Organization (1920-1930, 1935-1946) and the 1st President of Israel from 1949 until his death on November 9, 1952. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Nicked at upper blank edge. Slightly soiled. 2 file holes at blank right edge. Fine condition.
