CHIANG KAI-SHEK. Signature in Chinese characters, 3¾x6½ card.
Imprinted at upper margin: "The President/of the/Republic of China". Embossed
sun logo of the Republic of China above imprint. Chiang Kai-Shek (1887-1975)
rose to power as a member of Sun Yat-sen's Kuomintang Party during the period
when China was struggling to replace the imperial system with a new, unifed
government. Educated in Japan (1907-1911), Chiang joined the Kuomintang as a
military officer in 1918, and by 1924 was head of the Whampoa Military Academy,
where many future Chinese leaders were trained. After Sun's death in 1925,
"Generalissimo" Chiang commanded the revolutionary army and was appointed
commander of the "northern expedition" to rid northern China of rule by military
warlords. He broke with the Communists (1927) and was elected Chairman of the
national government of the Republic of China (1928). Threatened by a coming
war with Japan, Chiang concluded a fragile truce with Mao Zedong's Communists
which lasted on paper throughout WWII. Japan's surrender led soon to a
resumption of the Chinese Civil War (1946), and within three years Chiang's
forces had been forced to flee to the Island of Taiwan. Chiang remained
President of the Republic of China until his death, always maintaining that his
was the legitimate government of China. Lightly soiled and slightly creased
at upper left margin, else fine condition.
