Photograph taken by photographer Nickolas Muray in 1952, the year Eisenhower
was elected President. California Republican William F. Knowland was U.S.
Senator from 1945-1959, serving as Senate Majority Leader (1953-1955) and
Minority Leader (1955-1959). After declining to run for reelection in 1958 and
losing his race for Governor, he resumed his newspaper career as publisher of
the "Oakland Tribune". After a series of extramarital affairs, Knowland divorced
HELEN KERRICK KNOWLAND, his wife of 45 years, in 1972 and married the
much younger Ann Dikson. Two tumultuous years followed, as Knowland squandered
his personal fortune and went deeply into debt to support his gambling habit and
the extravagant tastes of Dikson. In 1974, amid rumors of threats upon his life
from organized crime figures to whom he owed money, Knowland died from a
self-inflicted gunshot wound at his summer home near Guerneville, California.
Ink slightly smudged at 3 letters of inscription. Creased at corners, slightly
creased elsewhere. Overall, fine condition.
