DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
Doodles drawn by the President on a 5½x5½ page, retrieved after Cabinet meetings by an aide.
Doodles, unsigned, front and verso, 5½x5½. On one side is a 1¼x1¼ pencil drawing of the head of a woman wearing a hat, along with a date (unknown hand) April 1 57". On verso is a 1x1½ pencil drawing of an abstract design. During Cabinet meetings, President Eisenhower would often draw "doodles" on the agenda or on pieces of note paper, later slipping them under his blotter at the Cabinet table. Jack Z. Anderson, a former Congressman from California serving as Special Administrative Assistant to the President (for liaison with the Congress) was required to attend all Cabinet meetings and observed Eisenhower's habit. For several months, Anderson retrieved and saved the doodles, until Ike began taking them with him to discard personally. The Eisenhower Museum in Abilene, Kansas possesses photostats of the doodles saved by Anderson. Paper is bisected by horizontal perforation dots, crossing the drawing of the woman, with ¼-inch paper separation at left edge. Two additional horizontal folds. Slightly frayed top edge. Overall, fine condition.
