DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
Reproduction of 17th century map of the New World.
Map signed: "Dwight D. Eisenhower", 1p, 14½x10¼.
Modern reproduction of a map of "America" from the original by
Dutch engraver Pettus Schenk (1645-1715), who republished the Mercator-Hondius
atlas. This copy was printed for the Holland-America Line. Holland-America was
founded in 1873 as the Netherlands-America Steamship Company, a shipping and
passenger line. Because it provided service to the Americas, it became known as
Holland-America Line. The company's first ocean liner was the original
Rotterdam, which sailed its maiden voyage from the Netherlands to New
York City on Oct. 15, 1872. The line was a principal carrier of emigrants from
Europe to the United States until well after the turn of the century, carrying
850,000 to new lives in the New World. Dwight D. Eisenhower's
great-great-great-grandfather, Johann Nicol (Hans Nicolaus) Eisenhauer
(1695-1760), born in the Palatinate (Germany), had emigrated with his three sons
from Rotterdam on the ship Europa to Philadelphia, arriving November 17,
1741. So it is fair to assume that this map was the conception of the New World
at the time his paternal descendants first came to America. Slightly soiled,
folds, none touch signature. Fine condition.
