DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
Eighteen months after becoming the first President to suffer a heart attack while in office, Ike signs a typed letter extending birthday wishes to his personal physician, Major General Howard McCrum Snyder.
Typed Letter signed: "D. E." as President. 1 page, 7x10¼. The White House, 1957 February 6. On White House letterhead to Major General Howard McC Snyder at the White House. In full: As there approaches for you another birthday anniversary, I realize anew that the sum total of my indebtedness has increased manifold - and my ability to 'repay' you has not kept pace at all. About the best I can do ever is to tell you once again how grateful I am to you and Alice for devoting these years to the welfare of the Eisenhower family. This note brings my warmest felicitations and the hope that your seventy-sixth birthday may be the happiest ever - and, as always, my personal regard. As ever". Howard McCrum Snyder (1881-1970) officially retired from the US Army in March 1945, remaining on the staff of General Eisenhower, then Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe as his personal physician, serving in this capacity for the rest of Eisenhower's military career, and during his tenure as President of Columbia University. When Eisenhower ran for President in 1952, Snyder accompanied him on campaign trips, and joined the White House staff in 1953. When Eisenhower became the only serving President to have a heart attack (September 1955), Snyder rendered the first medical aid. He was at Eisenhower's bedside during his surgery for ileitis (June 1956). He accompanied the President on foreign trips and even golfing vacation, attending to First Lady Mamie Eisenhower as well. It's not surprising that the President comments in this letter, "... my indebtedness to you has increased manifold." He outlived the President he served so faithfully by only one year. Horizontal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Stained and soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
