DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
Dwight D. Eisenhower sends a typed letter of regret that he will not
be able to accept the invitation to the USO group.
Typed Letter Signed: "D.E.", 1p, 7x10¼. Gettysburg, Pa.,
1962 May 11. To Honorable Robert Dechert, Dechert, Pride (sic, Price) and
Rhoads, Philadelphia. In full: "I have your letter of the fourth,
together with the invitation from the USO group (which I have had to decline
because a commitment, long made, makes even consideration of it impossible). As
to your suggestion about a luncheon of the World Affairs Council of
Philadelphia, I really think you must count me out -- certainly as of this
year. I am not sure when Mrs. Eisenhower and I shall leave for California, but
it will not be too long after the end of October, and I know you cannot and do
not want to schedule another luncheon, even if I could find the time, so soon
after the one at which Allen Dulles is to appear. We hope to spend five or six
months in Southern California, which makes completely impossible any engagement
in the East. Another consideration is that I have pending tentative dates with
other, similar groups - - and I must give them priority. With warm regard, and
real regret that I seem always so uncooperative! Sincerely," ALLEN
DULLES, brother of EISENHOWER's Secretary of State John Foster
Dulles, was Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 1953-1961.
Established in 1949, the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia is "a private,
non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to creating an informed
citizenry on matters of national and international significance." Today, Dechert
Price and Rhoads is a major Philadelphia firm with one of the largest trust and
estate practices in the United States. Light paper clip impression at upper
left. Fine condition.
