DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
Dwight D. Eisenhower sends a typed letter of thanks for the dinner and the ability to
see everyone.
Typed Letter Signed: "Ike E", 1p, 7x10¼. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1965 June 15. To
Robert Cutler, Boston. In full: "I am sure that you must have been very happy with your
dinner. Everybody had a wonderful time and I was particularly delighted to see how well
our old associates looked. You, as well as Sinny Weeks, GeorgeHumphrey, Lewis
Strauss and Douglas Dillon, looked even younger than you did six years ago! I met
some very interesting individuals. There is one to whom I hope you will convey a special
word of thanks, Robert Thayer. He insisted on volunteering to make a necessary phone
call for me and in doing so gave me more time to visit with your guests. I could easily
have sat down for a (sic) hour's conversation with each man present. For this, of course,
there was no time whatsoever but my brief glimpse of each did convince me that you
have a most wonderful crowd of close friends. With the hope that your book will soon be
on the market and I can get a copy and, of course, with warm and personal regard. As
ever," Typed postscript: "P.S. I enclose a little poetry [not present] that was given to me
by someone on the day I became 70." ROBERT CUTLER (1895-1974) was President
Eisenhower's Special Assistant for National Security Affairs. The book referred to by
Eisenhower was No Time for Rest published by Little, Brown in 1966. SINCLAIR
"SINNY" WEEKS was Eisenhower's Secretary of Commerce, GEORGE
HUMPHREY was his Secretary of the Treasury and LEWIS STRAUSS, his Secretary
of Commerce. DOUGLAS DILLON was Eisenhower's Undersecretary of State when
he was named by President-elect Kennedy to be Secretary of the Treasury. Lightly
soiled at upper margin. Encapsulated. Fine condition.
