Washington, D.C. In full: "In accepting your resignation as Ambassador
to Poland, effective on a date to be determined, I want to express my
appreciation for your outstanding service to your country. You brought to
your post many years of rich experience as well as accumulated knowledge in the
field of diplomacy. It is a signal honor that you have after more than forty-two
years in the field of foreign affairs of being Dean of the Foreign Service.
Certainly you should feel a sense of deep personal gratification as you look
back over your distinguished career. On your retirement from government service
you take with you my very best wishes for many years of happiness.
Sincerely," Just ten days earlier, the United States agreed to lend
Poland money for the development of mining and agriculture. South Carolinian
JOSEPH EARLE JACOBS (1893-1971) had been appointed Ambassador to Poland by
President Eisenhower on April 1, 1955. He left his post on July 23, 1957.
Jacobs had previously served as U.S. Vice Consul in Shanghai (1919), Consul in
Shanghai (1924-1929) and Ambassador to Czechoslovakia (1948-1949). Ink docket at
top, probably by Jacobs: "Rec'd 6-21-57". Paper clip impression there
also. Lightly creased at upper margin. Fine condition.
