DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
Eisenhower, who played baseball in high school, sends thanks for a silver replica of the ten millionth baseball.
Typed Letter Signed: "Dwight D. Eisenhower" as 34th U.S. President, 1p, 6¾x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1957 July 26. To Calvin R. Griffith, President, Washington Senators. In full: "Thank you for bringing Mr. Gerald to my office this morning, and for joining with him in presenting to me a sterling silver replica of the ten millionth baseball used by both major leagues." Lightly creased. Paper clip impression at upper blank left corner, else fine condition. Accompanied by June 14, 1957, TLS of Paul Gardner of Young & Rubicam Advertising to Griffith about presenting the replica. In part: "The sterling silver replica of the ten millionth major league baseball which President Eisenhower threw out to open the 1957 season-and which, incidentally, is now in the Baseball Hall of Fame-has arrived. Do you think that a time might be arranged for you to present the sterling silver replica to the President...." Creased. Griffith's father, Clark Griffith, was founder of the Washington Senators and it was he who convinced President Taft to commemorate the opening of the 1910 season by throwing out the first ball. Griffith Stadium is named after him. He died a year and a half before this letter when CALVIN GRIFFITH took over the ball club. Two items.
