DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
Dwight D. Eisenhower sends a typed letter of invitation.
Typed Letter Signed: "Ike E" as President of Columbia University, 1p, 5¾x7¾. New York, 1948 September 14. To Robert Woodruff, New York, New York. In full:"Though I realize you may not be in New York next month, I am sending you this invitation in the hope you might be here. Please disregard the September 15th deadline which is mentioned. An affirmative reply from you will be most welcome at any time. With warm regards, Sincerely," Robert Woodruff was President of Coca-Cola from 1923-1955. During WWII, General Eisenhower, an avid Coca-Cola drinker, asked his friend Robert Woodruff to ship his favorite soda to him. Woodruff decided that Coca-Cola's place was near the front line. He sent an order to "see that every man in uniform gets a bottle of Coca-Cola for five cents wherever he is and whatever the cost to the company." On June 29, 1943, General Eisenhower ordered three million bottles of Coca-Cola to be sent to the Allies in North Africa. After the war, Eisenhower frequently invited Woodruff to play cards at his Georgia hunting club and was photographed on more than one occasion drinking a Coke. When Ike became President, he put Woodruff's name on the Secret Service's exclusive list of visitors with standing invitations to the White House. Horizontal fold touches signature. Staple holes and paper clip stain at upper left corner. Overall, fine condition.
