Washington, D.C., 1954 March 18. On White House stationery to Mrs. Howard
C. Snyder ("Dear Alice"), Washington, D. C. In full: "I have a
suspicion that without any urging from me tomorrow will be one of your happiest

pressure Howard into taking the vacation you and he both need. With affectionate
regard, Sincerely"'[signature] "P.S. The picture you wanted for
Howard is attached." [Item not included.] Howard McCrum Snyder, a retired
US Army major general, had been Eisenhower's personal physician since 1945,
and would continue in that role when Ike left the army, joined the White House
staff in that capacity, and accompanied the President on overseas trips and
vacations. Dr. Snyder would render initial care to Eisenhower when he suffered a
heart attack, the first for a serving President, in 1955. The Snyders were
close personal friends of the Eisenhowers; Alice Snyder frequently joined
Mamie Eisenhower in canasta, the First Lady's favorite game. Horizontal mailing
