DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER
He lauds the role of the Eisenhower Fellowships in promoting international goodwill.
Typed Letter signed: "D.E." as President, 1p, 7x10¼. Washington, D.C., 1960 September 28. On White House letterhead to Thomas B. McCabe, President, Scott Paper Company, Chester, Pennsylvania. In full: "I was perfectly serious in saying, in my little talk before the trustees, fellows and guests of Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships, Inc., that I had no idea how many people would be present. My regret is that my schedule did not allow me to spend a little more time with you and the many friends in the audience of whom I caught only a glimpse. Again I say there could never have been a finer, more enduring, more gratifying birthday present than the one you gave to me seven years ago. It warms my heart now as it did then. Congratulations on the fine record you have made in the wise selection of recipients of the fellowships. Time and again, on my recent travels, I was greeted by a former Eisenhower fellow, and always that individual described in most glowing terms the rewarding experience he had had; always, too, I gained the impression that because of that one individual's firsthand knowledge of America had resulted hundreds if not thousands of real, understanding friends for America. When I met that individual in South America, in Asia or in the Middle East, my impression was always the same. With warm regards". The Eisenhower Fellowships were established in 1953, the first year of Ike's 8-year term as 34th President. The Eisenhower Fellows program, still flourishing in the 21st century, invites promising future leaders from 25 countries each year for a 2-month visit to the US for in-depth discussions with American government and business leaders. Other programs send emerging American leaders abroad for similar discussions. Thomas McCabe (1893-1982), longtime President of Scott Paper Company and a former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board (1948-1951), was the founding President of Eisenhower Fellowships, and bestowed a Philadelphia headquarters for the program in 1957. Slightly creased. Staple holes in upper left corner. Overall, fine condition.
